Jury in Flint Water Crisis Civil Trial Unable to Reach a Decision

U.S. Magistrate Judge David R. Grand, of the Eastern District of Michigan, has declared a mistrial after jurors were unable to reach a verdict in a case involving companies that had been hired to help Flint, Mich., fix its water system—but were alleged to have instead contributed to the city’s lead-tainted water crisis, reports the Wall Street Journal. Multiple Flint residents sued Veolia North America and Texas-based Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam Inc., an engineering consulting firm also known as LAN, accusing them of being partially responsible for the water crisis that began in 2014. Wayne Mason, a lawyer for LAN, said the company had a limited scope of work on Flint’s water change. A spokesman for Veolia North America said the company would have preferred a unanimous verdict. Corey Stern, a lawyer representing the plaintiffs, said they were disappointed with the outcome and added that their team was outspent in the trial.
