Maryland to Resentence DC Sniper Lee Boyd Malvo

Twenty years ago, the D.C. sniper attacks terrified the country, killing 10 people in D.C, Maryland and Virginia in a spree of gun violence, preceded by months of random attacks in states across the country. On Aug. 26, an appeals court in Maryland determined that shooter Lee Malvo, who was 17 years old when the attacks were committed, must be resentenced, CNN reports. The decision comes in the light of holdings since 2002 that restrict life without parole sentences for juvenile or youthful offenders. Malvo was sentenced to multiple life sentences in both Virginia and Maryland, which makes the question of his resentencing largely academic, Judge Robert McDonald noted in his review of the case. Malvo is serving his life sentence in a Virginia state prison.
