Italian Mafia Boss Arrested After 30 Years on The Run

Italy’s most wanted Mafia Boss, Matteo Messina Denaro, was arrested Monday in the Sicilian capital of Palermo after after being on the run for 30 years, reports Al Jazeera. Messina Denaro, purportedly a boss in Sicily’s Cosa Nostra, was receiving treatment for an unknown condition at a private hospital in Palermo when police arrested him. Messina Denaro faces two life sentences, one for the murders of two anti-mafia prosecutors in 1992 and one for bomb attacks in Florence, Rome and Milan in 1993.

John Dickies, a professor of Italian studies at University College London, told Al Jazeera that Messina Denaro’s arrest is “another signal of the decline of the Sicilian mafia.”
