The ‘New IRA,’ an Irish Republican Army splinter group, has claimed responsibility for the shooting of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell, an off-duty officer who was attacked while coaching a kid’s soccer game in Omagh, Northern Island last week, the Associated Press reports.
A statement on a wall in Londonderry on Sunday claimed the New IRA was responsible and intentionally targeted Caldwell. The police are treating the shooting as terrorism-related and are actively investigating; six men have been detained.
In Northern Ireland, the last fatal attack on a police officer was the bombing murder of Ronan Kerr in 2011, also in Omagh.
