IRA Splinter Group Claims Responsibility for Northern Ireland Police Shooting

The ‘New IRA,’ an Irish Republican Army splinter group, has claimed responsibility for the shooting of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell, an off-duty officer who was attacked  while coaching a kid’s soccer game in Omagh, Northern Island last week, the Associated Press reports

A statement on a wall in Londonderry on Sunday claimed the New IRA was responsible and intentionally targeted Caldwell. The police are treating the shooting as terrorism-related and are actively investigating; six men have been detained.

In Northern Ireland, the last fatal attack on a police officer was the bombing murder of Ronan Kerr in 2011, also in Omagh.
