Families Demand Investigation into South Carolina County Jail

On Wednesday, the families of two men who died after incidents concerning Spartanburg County law enforcement gathered outside the county detention facility and called for accountability and transparency, Chalmers Rogland reports for the Herald Journal. Community activists joined the families in calling for deeper investigations into the facility’s conditions.

Candace Brewer, President of the Racial Justice Network, read a letter at the demonstration that was sent to South Carolina officials. The letter called for an investigation by the Department of Justice, citing a report from a University of South Carolina professor which showed that more in-custody deaths occurred at SCDF than any other county jail from 2015-2021.
