South Carolina circuit court Judge Daniel Hall has denied a motion by disgraced former attorney Richard “Alex” Murdaugh’s legal defense team to use his own money for his criminal appeal, Michael M. Dewitt, JR reports for Greenville News. Murdaugh, who was recently convicted and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for the murders of his wife and son, filed an appeal on March 9. His attorneys argued that the fees already paid were insufficient and requested more funds to mount an adequate defense.
The court-appointed receivership, which controls Murdaugh’s assets, has earmarked those funds for his alleged victims. The receivership started controlling Murdaugh’s assets after numerous criminal charges and lawsuits against Murdaugh, including a wrongful death suit related to a 2019 boat crash involving his son. The judge’s decision means that the money will go to the victims rather than his lawyers as Murdaugh continues serving his life sentences in a maximum security state prison.
