CT Politician Attacked at Eid al-Adha Service

Connecticut state Rep. Maryam Khan was attending an Eid al-Adha prayer service with her family at Hartford’s XL Center arena on Wendesday when she was approached by a man who followed and assaulted her. The alleged attacker, Andrey Desmond, was detained by bystanders before being arrested by officers with the Hartford Police Department, Justin Muszynski reports for the Hartford Courant.

While Desmond has not been charged with a hate crime, CAIR-CT Farhan Memon called for an investigation into a potential bias-related motive and condemned the low police presence at the event. According to Memon, participants had to hire two off-duty officers to monitor the prayer service at their own expense. “Other cities and towns in Connecticut have proactively assigned officers to mosques to protect against such attacks,” Memon said.
