Over the weekend, at least one person was killed and another 22 were injured during a shooting at a community Juneteenth celebration in a Chicago-area suburb, Jamiel Lynch, Adrienne Broaddus and Lauren Mascarenhas report for CNN. According to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, officers were on scene to help monitor the large holiday gathering until, at 12:25 a.m, they were called away to respond to a nearby fight. Five minutes later, an unknown number of gunmen with multiple weapons opened fire on attendees.
Police are still investigating, and have not yet identified a motive for the attack. The Sheriff’s office is working through witness and victim interviews and a review of evidence on the scene, Matt Stefanski reports for ABC5 Chicago. In a statement, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker thanked first responders for their interventions after the shooting and condemned gun violence as a public health emergency in the U.S. “Gathering for a holiday celebration should be a joyful occasion, not a time where gunfire erupts and families are forced to run for safety,” Pritzker said.
