The Global Coalition to Address Synthetic Drug Threats was launched with the participation of senior government officials from over 80 countries and leaders from international organizations. While announcing the initiative, Secretary Antony J. Blinken pointed to The United States experiencing the devastating impact of synthetic drugs, especially fentanyl, as one reason why the country is looking to tackle untreated addiction and drug trafficking as key drivers of the epidemic. Synthetic drugs, including fentanyl, have become the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 49.
The coalition aims to prevent illicit manufacture and trafficking of synthetic drugs, detect emerging threats, and advance public health interventions. The coalition seeks international cooperation to address weak links in the global system and shares best practices and innovative solutions.
