Maryland Attorney General Suspends Hate Crimes Commission Member Over Pro-Palestine Facebook Posts

Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown has suspended a member of the state’s new hate crimes commission for her social media comments promoting the Palestinian cause and criticizing Israel, Alex Mann reports for the Baltimore Sun. The attorney general’s office said that Zainab Chaudry, executive director of the Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, is temporarily suspended from her position on the commission because her social media posts “challenged the Commission’s ability to do its work.” Chaudry said her comments, which were posted on Facebook, reflect only her views, not those of the commission or the Council on American-Islamic Relations, and said she was exercising her right to free speech, but others have criticized her posts as antisemitic.
